CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Sam Wilson
Canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Canon Point: post Captain America: Civil War, after being broken out of prison on the Raft

Appearance: Sam Wilson | Falcon
Age: 37

Setting: Earth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
History: Wiki link to his history in the movies here! Since we don't know much about Sam's background prior to the military in the movie, I'd like to fill that in with a few things from his comic history. Namely, that Sam grew up in Harlem and his father was a minister who was murdered trying to stop a fight. This was one of the factors that lead to him enlisting in the military and choosing to go the pararescue route, to save lives.

Personality: How Sam presents himself tends to vary slightly, depending on the circumstances and how much focus Sam is putting on how he comes across. By necessity, Sam being a friend is different from Sam leading a group at the VA, which is different from Sam the soldier or Sam as the Falcon. Whether it was tending to injured soldiers who may not be at their best or reaching out to veterans with various levels of trauma, Sam has to be very aware of how he's being perceived at the moment, and do what he can to alter it to best suit the current situation.

This means that Sam has had a lot of practice keeping his head and remaining calm in some very stressful, and very dangerous, situations. As a military man he's had to keep his wits enough to provide medical attention to soldiers under far less than ideal circumstances, and working as a counselor for the VA has taught him to remain calm and collected during things like breakdowns and flashbacks. Sam's the kind of guy who rolls with the punches, and it takes a lot to visibly throw him. Case in point, a superhero and a spy show up on his doorstep dirty and bloody, tell him everyone they know is trying to kill them, and his response is to let them in and cook them breakfast. Even if he did feel the need to add a few snarky comments.

One of the things that generally always shows through is his sense of humor. Sam is snarky and sarcastic - and at times casually self-deprecating - no matter what may be happening. He quips over commlinks in the middle of battles, drops one liners and lighthearted questions in the middle of serious conversations, and uses humor to diffuse the tension in a room. He'll hassle and tease and poke at just about anyone - even national icons, deadly assassins, or kings in cat suits. If sometimes those comments dip into flirting territory, well, he's almost as equal opportunity there as he is about teasing. Sam can definitely be charming, and his levelheaded compassion and casual acceptance can make him come across as a very likeable guy.

A large part of Sam is externally motivated, in that a vast majority of his life has been devoted to what other people need. He went the pararescue route after enlisting in the military, which is far from an easy branch to join, and their motto is "That Others May Live." It's a motto that sticks with Sam even after he "got out," made obvious by the fact that he became a counselor for other veterans, and even by getting back in when Captain America needed help. His focus is nearly always on other people, whether it be patching them back up physically, helping them cope with their issues and disconnect with the world, or having their back in a massive gunfight.

That's not to say he completely overlooks himself, however. He knows very well that to help people sort their shit out, you have to have your own shit sorted first. He's not always the best at it - he's human like anyone else, and a former soldier to boot. He has his own demons to face, his own struggles with survivor's guilt and feeling out of place in the world. Sam has his good days and his bad days, but he's at the point where his good days are a lot more numerous than his bad. For the most part, he's confident in himself and his own abilities. He's practical, he knows his limitations and isn't above commenting on them, though he does occasionally try to push them. Sam's never afraid to make his own opinions known, to make it clear when he has a problem with something or to stand up for himself.

In general, Sam is a very good judge of character. He usually knows when to push someone and when to take a step back, and he isn't afraid to ask the hard questions, though he doesn't expect anyone to have all the answers. He's also not afraid to point out the difficult potential truths, even if someone might not want to hear them. He's easily able to relate to people, usually able to find some point of commonality, though obviously that's easier with his fellow soldiers. When Sam believes in someone, he does so completely, and he can be fiercely loyal. It's less of a blind faith and more of a confidence that someone worth his trust is worth it absolutely, and he doesn't have to worry about their motivations - though he's not above questioning their plans, even if ultimately he'll damn near always stick with them. Once Sam's on someone's side, there's very little he wouldn't do for them.

Canon Abilities/Skills: Sam is a human with no superpowers, but he does have a number of specialized skills, including:
• formal military/combat experience (including training and working with a superhero team)
• pararescue training (which is described pretty decently in the link here)
• skilled with various weapons including knives and a large variety of guns, enough to have good aim while moving extremely fast/erratically and to be able to easily shoot guns he steals off people
• able to use an experimental winged jet pack
• certified VA peer specialist

ON STATION 72
Symbiote Specialization: Rho
Symbiote Ability: Energy/lifeforce transference
RANK ONE
(+) Sam's able to use his own energy/lifeforce to heal injuries, illnesses, or fatigue of others - or use the energy/lifeforce of others to heal his own. His own immune system has been boosted to the point that it's really difficult for him to get sick, and his endurance and healing has been boosted to allow him to recover from injuries or fatigue an additional 1/4 quicker than normal.
(-) The only way to use this ability is through touch - Sam has to be touching whoever he's attempting to use it on. He also has virtually no control over this ability. If he touches someone who has a broken arm, guess what, he has a broken arm now. If he hasn't slept in three days and touches someone who's well-rested, now he's fine and they're exhausted. This ability is one-way and one-time only: if he heals someone's cold, he's stuck with that cold until it's run its course, and if he uses someone to heal his sprained ankle, he can't take it back. His ability will heal major injuries and illnesses, but nothing chronic or potentially fatal.

RANK TWO
(+) Sam's endurance and healing has been boosted further, allowing him to recover an additional 1/2 faster than normal symbiote enhancement. The range for using his ability has increased somewhat, enabling him to use it from a distance of about 3 feet from a brood member, or about 1 foot from a host in another brood or a non-host. His level of control has a minor increase - he can now manage to only use enough energy from him or the other person to essentially "split" whatever ails one of them. One person's pneumonia becomes both of them having a head cold, a broken ankle on one of them becomes a sprained ankle on both of them, etc.
(-) Using his ability from a short distance isn't automatic, but it's also more difficult, and can result in headaches, nosebleeds, increased fatigue. The more serious the injury/illness/fatigue, or the more emotionally attached Sam is to the person he's using it on, the more automatic his ability is. If it's a cut on a stranger, he can pretty much ignore it - but multiple broken bones on a brood member or a close friend, and he won't be able to stop it. It's still one-way and one-time, and he's still unable to heal chronic or potentially fatal conditions.

RANK THREE
(+) Another boost to Sam's endurance and healing, allowing him to recover an additional 3/4 faster, and his range has increased to about 7 feet for brood members and 4 feet for non-brood members/non-hosts. He now has a lot more control over his ability and is able to stop it from happening most of the time. If there's a third person in range, Sam can now do a three-way energy split - any combination of healing one person completely using the energy from the other two, healing two people completely using the energy from the third, or splitting any illnesses/injures between all three of them. If he uses the energy from two people, he's now able to heal chronic as well as potentially fatal conditions.
(-) The further away Sam is from the other people, the harder it is to use his ability, and it can still result in headaches, nosebleeds, and increased fatigue. For close friends and seriously injured brood members, his ability is still automatic and will heal them if he touches them whether he likes it or not. Even with a third person, his ability is still one-time. Once he's finished the energy transference he's unable to go back and adjust it, or attempt to later use another person. He's still unable to heal chronic or potentially fatal conditions with only one other person.

Inventory: his Avengers uniform and wing pack (minus the Redwing drone), a cell phone

Rescue Write-up:
He'd known this wouldn't be easy. Back on the Raft, Sam'd always believed that Steve wouldn't let them rot in there any longer than he could help, though some of the others hadn't had quite his conviction. But he hadn't known how long that would be, and he'd kind of assumed that getting them out wouldn't be under circumstances where they could all just walk free.

Sure enough, it'd been a jail break - and Sam has to admit he was a little skeptical when he found out they were going to take refuge in Wakanda with King Kitten, after just how hard the guy had been trying to kill Barnes. Still, he'd take it if it meant none of them being stuck in an underwater prison meant to hold the likes of the Hulk.

Getting their gear back - well, most of it, Steve's shield was conspicuously absent - was definitely a bonus.

But he'd kind of thought they'd have a least a little bit of a break. A month, maybe, for it to start sinking in that they were still fugitives, even more so now that they'd broken out of prison on the Raft. For them to figure out where they were going to go from here, because Sam knew damn well that none of them had gone against the Accords just to sit around on their assess in Wakanda.

They hadn't gotten that, though. It hadn't even been two weeks before the next threat had come for them. It's not Stark, or Ross, or anyone associated with the Accords near as Sam can tell - but then again, the only thing that Sam can tell is that it'd come with barely enough warning for them to suit up and take a stand against it.

They're all tired, and they're fighting blind but they're still fighting. They're still a good team, they still work together better than almost anything. Even T'challa. Sam's not surprised that he's good, because damn Sam'd already known that, but he's a little surprised that the Black Panther fights so well along with them.

It doesn't last. The tide turns, and Sam starts to feel the tinge of desperation. He's up in the air, trying to level the playing field and engage the things coming after them from above, but right now all it means is that he's got the perfect vantage point to watch his team fall apart.

He folds his wings in, keeping his thrusters activated as he falls faster than is probably wise, but it doesn't matter right now if it means he can get down to help his team. Only the things notice him - either that or they'd been gunning for him the whole time - and suddenly he's surrounded. Sam veers off course, trying to avoid them, but they just end up slamming him into the side of a building so hard he sees stars and tastes copper. Things go unfocused for a little bit, and when he comes to enough to zero back in on the chaos on the ground, things haven't improved.

T'challa's a whirlwind of motion but there's cracks in that damn near indestructable suit of his, Wanda's a red blur barely able to stand, he can't even see Scott and he has no idea if that's because he's gone tiny or from something much, much worse. Clint's close by, but shit he isn't in any better condition than Sam, and he can tell how much Clint is struggling to pull back his bow. And Steve - Steve's still going strong, but of course he is. He'll go until he has nothing left, Sam's known that for a long time.

Only for the first time, Sam feels a twinge of fear that it might actually happen.

That's when he sees her, when he hears her murmuring to him that there's a way for him to stop this. That he just has to come with her, and he can save himself, he can save all of them. It'll be dangerous, but they'll be safe.

He should know better than to follow mysterious figures, no matter how comforting they sound and how much he wants to believe them, but-

But Sam can barely breathe, and there's a pretty ominous gurgle in his lungs. He still can't find Scott, Wanda's on her knees, T'challa's lost his mask somewhere, Steve is taking longer and longer to get up, and Clint isn't even moving anymore, he's just watching the chaos the exact same way Sam is. And if they go down, who knows what will happen.

In the end, it's not like it's really even a hard choice. He'd put his old life on hold to throw his lot in with Steve and Natasha to take down HYDRA and SHIELD and look for Barnes, given it up completely when he joined the Avengers, and he'd known full well that he was probably going to end up in prison somewhere when he told Steve and Barnes to get out of there back in the airport. If the threat is big enough, Sam's always going to do whatever he needs to in order to take it out, to keep people safe - especially these people, who've already been through so much. He can't lay up here and watch them fall.

Not again, never again.

"Yeah, I'm in, all right, let's do it."
