❰ sam's insisted on getting steve out of the apartment he shares with bucky — began sharing with him only a day before the winter soldier was triggered, and how's that for a fucking omen — and to be honest, steve is almost grateful for the reprieve. jack's on bucky watch (which steve isn't even sure is necessary but every time he thinks of just leaving bucky the fuck alone he also thinks of coming home to an empty apartment and — no. no.), steve doesn't have work tonight, and he needs...
perspective. the kind of perspective only sam wilson can offer.
sam had made them dinner, which they ate mostly in silence, and now they're sitting on the couch, sam with a beer and steve with empty hands. it takes a moment for him to work up to his question, but the intent to speak's been apparent for nearly a minute now. ❱
[ That hadn't been the first time that Sam'd fought the Soldier - far from it - but it is the first time that he's... tentatively hopeful that it might be the last. Or at least, that moving forward, it might be better. Honestly, he's mostly just grateful he'd told Steve a little about the symbiote and the abilities it'd given him, because otherwise he'd be in a whole world of guilt over Steve finding out like that.
And he knows there's something on Steve's mind - of course he knows, he knows Steve, even if he might be a little further ahead on whatever time continuum is out there. It hurts his head if he thinks about it too much, same as it had on the Nest, and it doesn't matter all that much anyway. Steve is Steve.
But he's not gonna push, not yet. If it looks like the guy's floundering, he might give him a little nudge, but this feels more like him gearing up to put it out there. Sam's a patient guy, especially for Steve.
So he's not surprised when Steve breaks the silence, and he shrugs one shoulder and lets the motion shift the way he's sitting a little, angled just slightly more towards Steve. ]
Someone from my homeworld arrived into Duplicity today. If you know anything about Shiloh, you know that is a bad thing. Life and death bad.
If you have any respect for me at all, please, keep anything you know about me (especially pertaining to my history or sex life) completely to yourself. Consequences of abusing my trust in this will not be pretty.
Yeah, man, of course. No one'll find out anything like that from me, you got my word.
[ He'd have done it without being asked, because he's used to guarding the things he knows about people very closely, but he also knows real damn well that isn't always the case. ]
should I be worried, or making plans to punch someone?
[ There's an unpleasant clench in his stomach - he'd stopped watching after what he'd seen his and Steve's copies do, hell bent on finding the location of the feed, but he hasn't had much luck there yet. ]
[ There's a rush of relief there. Sam's been around, brought food or company occasionally, given Steve a place to talk - but mostly he's been trying not to be another person hovering, not to shove his way in when there might not even be anything he could do.
But he's been worried, about all of them. ]
Shit, that's good to hear. You guys need anything?
[ Sam's... been a pretty complicated tangle of worrying and feeling like there's more he could be doing, while not wanting to overstep and just add to the people crowding around Bucky - the ones who know this version of him better than Sam himself does. He knows what it feels like to suffocate under too many people worrying about you, is all.
Still, he's relieved to get the text, even if he won't admit it. ]
oh you got apologies now that's new, this is nice careful, I might get used to it
[ There's the briefest pause, then he goes through with sending the next bit. He's not going to tell Bucky that it wasn't him and he shouldn't be sorry, because, well. Technically it kind of was, and Sam's not a big fan of telling people how feel, but still. It's not like Sam wasn't well aware of what he was getting into. ]
I knew exactly what I was signing up for, and I did it anyway. my choice.
[ Sam has to do a double take there - wouldn't have surprised him coming from Jack, maybe, but from Barnes - it doesn't really matter, though, because his answer'd be the same regardless. Except now he's got a little more fondness to round out the surface hatred of their weird relationship, but whatever, not the point here. ]
he's not wrong I'm not a therapist or anything just a guy who's been through some shit and picked up a pretty decent toolbox to deal with it but if you're anything like me than by the time I was ready to reach out that was something that really came in handy
[ There's a faint sensation of amusement, fond and exasperated, the perked interest of curiosity, but Sam doesn't bat an eye at Damon's sudden increased presence. It's not like Sam doesn't do it right back. ]
[ this won't be coming from jack's phone, as he's had his data recently encrypted by June, but jack's been way too much of a man-ho not to have his picture on about 8 million other peoples' phones by now.
so, from some unnamed stranger's phone, sam will be getting a photo much like this, just pretend you can make the face out as jack's okok? ok.
not the picture itself, of course, if it'd come from jack's phone then sam would've probably had some questions, but he'd have been happy to go with it.
getting naked photos of a friend from a stranger's number, though, that's creepy as hell, and sam immediately forwards the picture to jack's number. ]
if this is the culmination of all that flirting I'm very appreciative but also real damn skeptical that you went and got a burner phone just to send it anonymously
[Loki sending pics isn't anything new. Memes, selfies, both sexy and mundane, pictures of adorable animals, basically Sam was given a visual stream of consciousness of the trickster at times. Usually all selfies, especially the nudes? Were done with a sultry or playful air. It's all good fun.
The ones he was getting now weren't in the usual vein. Something about posture, and expression in the ones where Loki's face was visible read as more tentative or uncertain than anything. Which might have to do with the fact that this particular montage was of the trickster in his Jotun form. And for as mild as these photos are compared to some of the racier sorts Loki had sent to deliberately tease, there was something a bit more intimate. Maybe it was just because of the exploratory focus of each one, or the fact that Sam knew how uncertain Loki was about this shape. Hard to say really!]
[ Getting a picture from Loki's number feels as natural as breathing now, and it automatically puts a smile on Sam's face. Might be because he's so used to the Nest, but there's something comfortable about the near constant updates. He even makes an effort to return them that he doesn't really do for many others.
But looking at these makes Sam's breath catch. Oh, oh that's so not what he expected, but for a moment he's fiercely grateful for them. Whether or not Sam had any part in prompting Loki to start exploring this part of himself, he's glad to see it. ]
these are my favorite ones so far on a score of 'hell yes' to 'I will break your phone' how mad will you be if I print one off and frame it
[ Yeah, Sam absolutely cares, sorry kid. He's pretty damn pleased to hear from him. ]
If you're talking about the seminars, then yeah, they do that every time. The cave shit was new, nice to see they're getting creative. I'm just glad to be where I can see the sky again.
I wasn't, but this is making me wonder if maybe I should pretend to be.
[ But he's just teasing - whatever's got Bucky texting him at this time of night is probably either something serious or dangerous - or ridiculous - and Sam'll never mind being there for all of the above. ]
