VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Name: Sam Wilson
Age: late 30s
Physical Appearance: Here!
Point in Timeline: post Captain America Civil War + two years game canon from [community profile] station72
World Description: Earth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
History/Background: Wiki link here!
Time Spent Across Multiverse: Sam is coming from [community profile] station72, a game where characters are "rescued" and enlisted to help the Nest against the Enemy that's seeking to destroy them. Characters are implanted with an alien symbiote that changes their physiology and connects them to a neural network that all "Hosts" can access. Each character is part of a "brood," which consists of six Hosts who have a stronger connection to each other and often end up having some form of bleed over when it comes to thoughts/feelings/memories/etc. The longer a Host spent as a part of the Nest, and the more they developed their abilities and mental connections, the more integrated into the "hive mind" they became.

Sam was in Wakanda when the Enemy attacked his world, and an agent of the Nest showed up as he and his friends were dying offering to save them and the rest of the world if he went with them to fight the Enemy. He took the deal.

When Sam first arrived in the Station, he couldn't control his abilities at all. At the time he and another Host were the only ones in their brood, and their lack of mental shields ended up with them getting caught in a loop of flashbacks. On top of that, every time he touched someone, he transferred their physical injuries and illnesses to himself. He put most of his focus on building mental shields and controlling his ability because of this - which meant strengthening his connection to the symbiote, and that was the start of his integration into the Nest, although he didn't know it at the time.

Hosts were sent on missions to stop agents of the Enemy, often with little guidance and prep time, and Sam was sent on three of them while at the Station. His main focus was always on keeping his fellow Hosts alive and sane, and getting them back safely. At the end of his last mission, he decided to take a break from active duty and focus on helping new Hosts with navigating the symbiote and training to be mission ready. By this time he had developed strong connections with a handful of Hosts, and to the Nest in general.

It was through them that he both integrated deeper into the Nest and held onto himself. Sam figured that if he had to be a part of the hive mind, he could at least decide who he was going to become most strongly connected to, and that way the pieces of them that he carried with him and vice versa would be ones that he chose. As far as he's concerned, he chose every one of the people who he bonded with so deeply that they became a permanent fixture in his mind.

Due to Sam's experience in [community profile] station72 and his relationship with the symbiote, Sam's mentality has shifted. In general, Sam's become used to having an immediate mental and emotional connection with those closest to him. He's even more of an open book than he was before, and he's adjusted to the idea that there's no real hiding what he's feeling or thinking to those he's close to. He's really no longer able to function completely alone, as he's used to constantly having at least one other presence with him, even if it's only in his mind. Being cut off or losing those connections tends to send him stumbling, and he has a very difficult time coping.

Sam also struggles with individuality. His integration into the Nest wasn't anywhere near complete, but it was a lot further along than he realizes. He has a tendency to view the people closest to him as an extension of himself - and to view himself as an extension of them. While he still doesn't believe in the missions they're sent on and genuinely does have the reservations he still says he does to new Hosts, Sam is very, very loyal to the Nest and its Hosts. They've become his first priority in everything, particularly those who've taken up permanent residence in his mind. Even if he had the option, he'd never give up his symbiote. If he could, and someone expressed interest, he'd give them a symbiote in a heartbeat.

Noteworthy Positive Characteristics:
Practical/adaptable: Sam has had a lot of practice keeping his head and remaining calm in some very stressful, and very dangerous, situations. As a military man he's had to keep his wits enough to provide medical attention to soldiers under far less than ideal circumstances, and working as a counselor for the VA has taught him to remain calm and collected during things like breakdowns and flashbacks. Sam's the kind of guy who rolls with the punches, and it takes a lot to really throw him. Case in point, a superhero and a spy show up on his doorstep dirty and bloody, tell him everyone they know is trying to kill them, and his response is to let them in and cook them breakfast. This has only grown with his time on the Station, as he's met people from different universes and gotten used to visiting alien planets.

Loyal: When Sam believes in someone, he does so completely, and he can be fiercely loyal. It's less of a blind faith and more of a confidence that someone worth his trust is worth it absolutely, and he doesn't have to worry about their motivations - though he's not above questioning their plans, even if ultimately he'll damn near always stick with them. Once Sam's on someone's side, there's very little he wouldn't do for them.

Compassionate: In general, Sam is easy going with a lot of empathy, and he cares about people not only in a general wanting to save the world and make it a better place sense, but on a personal level. He's easily able to relate to people, usually able to find some point of commonality, though obviously that's easier with his fellow soldiers. For the most part, Sam's a pretty good judge of character. He usually knows when to push someone and when to take a step back, and he isn't afraid to ask the hard questions, though he doesn't expect anyone to have all the answers. He's also not afraid to point out the difficult potential truths, even if someone might not want to hear them.

Sense of humor: Sam is snarky and sarcastic - and at times casually self-deprecating - no matter what may be happening. He quips over commlinks in the middle of battles, drops one liners and lighthearted questions in the middle of serious conversations, and uses humor to diffuse the tension in a room. He'll hassle and tease and poke at just about anyone - even national icons, deadly assassins, or kings in cat suits. If sometimes those comments dip into flirting territory, well, he's almost as equal opportunity there as he is about teasing. Sam can definitely be charming, and his levelheaded compassion and casual acceptance can make him come across as a very likeable guy.

Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:
Reckless: Sam is the guy who said hell yes when someone asked if he'd like to take part in a experimental program involved strapping metal wings to his back and jumping off things to see if he could fly. He's picked up and left his life more than once because he was needed, jumping into things like overthrowing a corrupt government organization, and going against hellicarriers and RPGs and people with super powers with not much more than his wings, some guns, and his skills. His judgement when it comes to his own life is not always the best, and his time on the Station has made that a little bit worse. Now he knows he can heal most anything, and it hasn't made him more cautious about diving into things.

Codependent: There were elements of this in Sam before his time on the Station, especially in his reaction to losing his wingman and best friend, but it's grown significantly being a part of the Nest. He relies heavily on his broodmate and on the people close to him, and it's extremely difficult for him to be by himself.

Externally motivated: A vast majority of Sam's life has been devoted to what other people need. He went the pararescue route after enlisting in the military, which is far from an easy branch to join, and their motto is "That Others May Live." It's a motto that sticks with Sam even after he "got out," made obvious by the fact that he became a counselor for other veterans, and even by getting back in when Captain America needed help. His focus is nearly always on other people, whether it be patching them back up physically, helping them cope with their issues and disconnect with the world, or having their back in a massive gunfight.

Hypocritical: Though Sam tries to practice what he talks about when it comes to coping skills and letting yourself need help and being smart about things - he isn't always. He tells people to consider all of their options when it comes to something dangerous and then jumps in with them anyway. He's always there to support other people but tends to be surprised when they do the same, and while he tries to get other people to realize that there's more to life than fighting a war, he's often the first one jumping in to put his own life at risk.

Character Fears: Sam's biggest fear is being alone. This comes in shades of feeling like he isn't good enough, with a mess of survivor's guilt, and being afraid of letting people down or not being able to save them. He's afraid of being the last one left behind. On the other side, he's also afraid of losing himself so completely that there'll be nothing left of him to end up alone.

Powers/Abilities: Prior to [community profile] station72, Sam was a human with no superpowers but a number of specialized skills, including:
• formal military/combat experience (including training and working with a superhero team)
• pararescue training (which is described pretty decently in the link here)
• skilled with various weapons including knives and a large variety of guns, enough to have good aim while moving extremely fast/erratically and to be able to easily shoot guns he steals off people
• able to use an experimental winged jet pack
• certified VA peer specialist

After merging with the symbiote, Sam now has a more alien physiology and a few enhancements detailed here!

Personal Item: His wings!
